Northrop Grumman Norden Systems, Norwalk, CT
• Recruited from General Motors Hughes Aircraft by United Technologies Norden Systems in 1986 to join the Multi-Mode Radar System (MMRS) Program Team performing a contract to upgrade the Israeli Air Force’s F-4 Phantom. Norden was experiencing severe schedule delays and cost overruns at that time.
• Initial assignment was Box Engineer for Antenna Assembly containing seven-channel low-noise amplifier and receiver system connected to flat-plate array that swiveled on a titanium three-axis gimbal assembly. Responsible for technical oversight of design and manufacture of all electronic and electrical components of the assembly, including engineering activities at subcontractor facilities for receivers, array, inertial measurement unit, transmit/receive limiters, waveguide switches, and electrical cables.
• Promoted to Project Engineer for Antenna Assembly and became responsible for managing completion of design and test of all components of five prototype systems of the Assembly. Responsibilities included organizing, planning, directing, and controlling the activities of internal electrical-, mechanical-, and software-engineering staff and external subcontractors. Utilized Earned Value Management to measure performance against budget and schedule requirements.
• Promoted to Project Engineer for Antenna Assembly and Antenna Electronics Unit and became responsible for delivering the prototype subsystems to system integration and test. Simultaneously oversaw transition of the subsystems from a prototype-assembly environment to a production-manufacturing environment.
• After completing successful delivery of the prototype subsystems to the manufacturing team, served as engineering liaison to a business development team responsible for marketing the MMRS and spin-off products to potential customers in Europe and Asia. Traveled extensively with the MMRS business development team and gave technical portions of presentations to potential customers.
• Promoted to Project Manager for Airport Movement Area Safety System for Aviation Authority of Singapore. Responsibilities included organizing, planning, directing, and controlling the activities of all internal staff and external subcontractors designing and developing the next generation of collision avoidance systems for airport runways and taxiways. Responsibilities included travel to Singapore to conduct management and design reviews and travel to Paris, France to conduct testing of the prototype system at a program-team-partner’s facilities at Charles de Gaulle Airport.
• Received a Turnaround Club Award for contributing to Norden’s return to profitability after successful completion of the Multi-Mode Radar System’s transition from engineering to production.
